Private William Henry Jones

 

William Henry Jones was born on 23 December 1898 at Lisnatrunk, Lambeg, County Down, the fifth of twelve children of labourer (later thread overlooker) James Jones and his wife Catherine (née Preston). At the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 28 Castle Street, Lisburn, with his parents and six of his siblings, and was employed as a thread worker.

Jones enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 2 February 1918 (Corps of Hussars No.72030). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve camp until the end of the war.

On 4 February 1919 at Antrim Jones re-enlisted, in the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys) (regimental number 33455 – later Army number 392014). He was discharged on 4 July 1922, being 'no longer physically fit for war service' (paragraph 392(xvi), King's Regulations). Noted on his service document is "char. wanted" and the fact that he was refused a pension.
